The short answer
Is October too late to trim cedars?
For a full shape up, usually yes. By October in Ontario, the summer trimming window has passed. Heavy shearing or cutting back a whole face of the hedge can expose bare wood and leave little time for any tender response to harden before winter. A healthy hedge is better left alone than trimmed simply to make it look even for a few weeks.
A broken branch is a different job. A small, clearly damaged branch can be corrected with a targeted hand cut if you can reach it safely. That does not mean trimming the rest of the hedge to the same line. For the full annual schedule and technique, read our Ontario cedar hedge trimming guide.
What should you do with the hedge right now?
The hedge looks untidy
Leave the cosmetic shaping for the main summer window. Take a photo and note where you want to adjust the line next season.
One branch is broken
Inspect the damage and any wildlife first. Remove only the broken section with clean hand pruners when the branch is small and safely accessible.
The top is too tall or splitting
Avoid a rushed height reduction. Large cuts can reveal a brown interior or leave an unstable tree. Ask for an assessment and a staged plan.
If a branch really needs a cut
Look through the hedge before using tools. Birds may still be using a nest, and a thick hedge can hide it even when the outside appears quiet. Postpone work that would disturb an active nest.
For a small broken twig, use sharp hand pruners to make the fewest clean cuts needed to remove damaged material. Keep surrounding green foliage intact. Avoid cutting into the old, leafless brown interior just to create a straight face; that area may not fill back in.
Do not climb an unstable ladder or cut a large split leader yourself. A professional can assess whether the tree needs a limited repair, support or a longer term reduction plan.

Better fall work for a cedar hedge
Move mulch aside and check the soil a few centimetres down. Water a dry root zone while the ground can still absorb moisture, especially around newer trees. Do not add water to saturated or frozen soil. Clear fallen leaves caught on the hedge and look for branches bent by weight or showing unusual browning.
Some older interior foliage turns brown and sheds in autumn. Do not use that as a reason to shear the hedge deeper. If entire branches or outer tips are browning, use our cedar browning guide to work out the cause.
For exposed hedges, plan protection from road salt, snow and drying winter wind. Our Ontario cedar winter care guide covers those steps in detail.
Fall trimming questions
Can I trim my cedar hedge in October in Ontario?
Avoid routine shaping and heavy shearing in October. The hedge has little time to recover before winter. If a small branch is broken or presents a clear hazard, make only the necessary selective cut after checking for wildlife and safe access.
Is September too late to trim cedar hedges?
September is later than the usual summer shaping window for Ontario cedars. It is better to postpone cosmetic shaping, particularly on a stressed or newly planted hedge. Correct damaged branches only when necessary.
Can I cut a cedar hedge in November?
Do not plan a routine hedge trim in November. Cold or frozen foliage can be brittle, and there is no reason to expose more of the hedge before winter. Deal with urgent broken limbs only when conditions and access are safe.
What if one cedar branch broke in a fall storm?
A clearly broken small branch can usually be removed with clean, sharp hand pruners, using the smallest cut that addresses the damage. Leave large, unstable or high branches to a qualified professional. Do not shear the whole hedge to match the cut.
Should I cut out brown foliage inside my cedar hedge in fall?
Some older inner foliage naturally sheds in autumn. A brown interior is not a reason to shear deep into the hedge. Check whether outer tips are still healthy and use the cedar browning guide if damage is spreading or whole branches are failing.
Plan your next cedar trim
The main annual shaping window is usually late June or July in southern Ontario. Use the complete guide to plan the work, or ask NorthCedar to look at a damaged or overgrown hedge.
